Sleep Apnea
Get a peaceful sleep.
Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder in which breathing is suddenly interrupted while the patient sleeps. These sudden interruptions can last a few seconds or minutes and can occur up to 30 times an hour (depending on the individual). Apnea is usually accompanied by snoring and causes discomfort to the patient. Obesity is often the most common cause.
The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This type of apnea causes a collapse of the airway and results in snoring during sleep.
Can a dentist help in cases of sleep apnea?
Yes. In certain cases of obstructive sleep apnea and snoring, the dentist can help the patient with systems such as an intraoral device that allows them to breathe correctly during sleep.
The system consists of two splints joined together by a system that advances the jaw slightly and in a controlled manner to avoid obstruction of the airway.
